Introduction to Ethnomathematics Blog!
Hello and welcome to my ethnomathematics welcome blog!
My name is Dylan Gosse, a fourth-year student at Brock University with a passion for education in the fields of geography and history. However, this blog post will have a particular interest in the relationship between mathematics and culture based on course material from the EDUC-4P75 Ethnomathematics course. I am thrilled to invite you on a fascinating journey through the world of ethnomathematics through these blog posts.
The captivating concept of ethnomathematics invites us to investigate the connections between mathematics and various cultural expressions. Ethnomathematics is a developing subject, as D'Ambrosio (1985) pointed out, which makes it worthwhile to continue studying the topic.
Throughout this blog, my aim is to unravel what I have learned throughout the course regarding math and culture’s relationships that often go unnoticed in our daily lives. You can anticipate a variety of posts, including personal reflections, course insights, and investigations into the diverse material that exists regarding the connection between mathematics and culture. I will share insights into what struck me during the class, the points I believe were most important, the dominant emotions that were evoked and how they affected me, and finally, any actions I may want to pursue in the future.
However, my journey isn't solely about understanding mathematical concepts across cultures; it's also about evolving as an educator and a lifelong learner. Throughout the course, I aspire to get a better understanding of cultural mathematics and to comprehend how diverse cultures embed mathematics into their societies and new ones. This would in turn enhance my teaching skills, to learn innovative methods of teaching math and other subjects, paving the way to becoming a more effective educator. I also hope to gain a sense of personal growth, by cultivating new skills and perspectives through ethnomathematics that will enrich not just my teaching but also my life beyond the classroom.
This blog isn't just about me; it's about the readers as well, adventuring on this interesting ethnomathematics journey together. I invite you to bookmark this page, follow along, and engage with the captivating world of ethnomathematics. Let's learn, reflect, and grow together!
Thank you for joining me on this introductory blog post on ethnomathematics. Until next time!
Warm regards,
Dylan Gosse
